About Louella

Hello and welcome to Louella Natural Health, Nelson

I’m Louella. I work in complementary health and I am a qualified and registered Naturopath (NZ Society of Naturopaths). I also have a BA (Hons) degree in Environmental Studies from the UK and a Diploma in Teaching from NZ.

A little bit of background about me:   I was born in the UK, emigrated to NZ in 1996 and moved to Dunedin, then Christchurch, where I completed my post graduate diploma in teaching and worked for 10 years as a Primary School teacher.  I moved to Whangarei and the Far North in 2014.  In 2015 I nearly lost my life due to a congenital heart condition that became serious.  This led to heart surgery, from which I have now recovered, thanks to an amazing group of surgeons, doctors and nurses.  I started up ‘Whangarei Natural Health’ in 2016, a successful business which thankfully helped me through Covid times.  Last year was one of those ‘ annus horribilis’, as the ex queen used to say.  It resulted in me adopting my greyhound, Bert, selling my house in Whangarei, getting in my car with my heavily pregnant daughter and said greyhound, and driving down to Nelson.

I am now very happily settled in Nelson.  I live in a beautiful spot overlooking the sea.  My grandson is now 4 months old and I never realised how much I could love him.  Bert is also happy and enjoys running in circles on Tahuna beach.

So, I guess all that indicates that I have been ‘through the wringer/grinder/mill’.   I have come out the other end, somewhat wrinkled but still thriving, with a much greater appreciation for what people have been through, and how they are still suffering from mental and physical health challenges.

I am now the proud owner of Louella Natural Health, based in Stoke, Nelson and accessible to Richmond.  I aim to listen to you carefully, to form a picture of who you are, what you have been through and to set up a holistic treatment plan specifically geared towards your individual needs. I spend a good deal of time working on my professional development, so that I can offer you the very latest research in Natural Health and complementary medicine.

We are all different and we all have our set of challenges in life.  I’m here for you, I’ve been there.

Louella 🙂

What I want to achieve:

My passion is helping Nelson people to live their healthiest life, through spending time with you, finding the cause for your health imbalance and treating you with good nutrition and lifestyle advice, as well as  researched herbal and nutritional supplements. There are a lot of choices out there, both from the internet and from heavily stocked supermarket shelves.  Some of these choices can be quite confusing.  My job is to simplify things for you – to give you professional advice about your health  and the supplements that you may need, so you save on the ones you don’t.  I can actually save you money in the long run!

Complementary Medicine I offer:

Initial 60-minute consultations and follow ups of 30 minutes, based at the ‘Health Hub’ 132 Collingwood Street (Sports Therapy), Nelson, and at the Greenmeadows Centre, Stoke.  My aim is to provide a relaxed but very professional and confidential conversation with you, so that you can share with me your health concerns and needs.  I spend time with you and listen to your story, in order to evaluate the cause of your condition and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan with you.

I may, with your permission, carry out a number of clinical assessments, including blood pressure and heart rate, orthostatic blood pressure, weight and body mass index, hair, skin, nails and tongue analysis. I can also arrange blood tests and other functional diagnostic testing, including:

  • Organic Acids test (OAT)
  • Genetic profile Analysis (Fitgenes) Health and Wellbeing profile
  • Comprehensive Stool analysis
  • Microbiome mapping
  • DUTCH Hormone testing
  • Small intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) breath test
  • Allergy testing: IgA, IgE and IgG (serum)

I am careful to check all your medications and supplements, in order to avoid any possible interactions.  I may also ask you to complete a three-day food and symptom diary, which is an important part of forming a ‘picture’ of your health.

I believe that complementary, personalised, holistic treatment programmes are the way of the future and Genetic Profile Analysis provides the ultimate assessment on which to base these programmes.  That is why I studied to become a Fitgenes Accredited practitioner and can now offer Health and Wellbeing Genetic Profile Analysis as another option at Louella Natural Health.

What it means to be a Registered Naturopath

A Registered Naturopath is obligated to have a recognized New Zealand qualification in Naturopathy, to complete a number of hours of professional development per year and to have a current First Aid certificate.

I am very happy and proud to have acquired a good deal of knowledge around Complementary Natural Medicine, both from my college study and from ongoing Professional Development.  The numerous seminars and conferences that I am lucky enough to attend, both in New Zealand and overseas, keep me up to date with the latest medical research around the world and advances in both the traditional and natural complementary medicine fields.

The Future for Complementary Medicine?

We are entering a very challenging, but potentially exciting time in the management of peoples’ health.  Although a number of infectious diseases have been reduced and we are now living longer, we are also experiencing many more chronic health conditions that are impacting on our quality of life.  These conditions are putting a huge strain on Primary Health Providers.  It is becoming increasingly apparent that we need to use trusted Complementary practitioners to lessen this strain and to provide the very best patient care.  Registered Naturopaths can work alongside your GP and are fast becoming a trusted part of the Complementary health care network.

We can then go further to achieving a common goal – your optimal health with longevity, in beautiful Nelson.
