Your genes no longer have to be your destiny. Science has proved that, although we cannot change our genes, we can make a difference to how these genes are expressed. Nutrigenomics is a scientific discipline that studies the interaction between genes, diet and lifestyle choice. These choices can affect gene expression and can influence your health, wellbeing and performance. Nutrigenetics, on the other hand, is the study of the impact of inherited genetic variations on our response to nutrition, exercise and lifestyle choices. We can’t change inherited genes, but we can identify our predisposition to certain health risks and compensate before clinical symptoms appear, by choosing ways to live our lives that fit best with our genes.
Recent years have shown a reduction in deaths from acute, infectious disease. However, globally, healthcare systems are now facing major challenges from chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, auto-immune conditions, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. Consequently, even though we now live longer, we now have a reduced expectancy to enjoy a healthy life. The most important factor contributing to decline in health expectancy is now understood to be the interaction of your genes with your environment and lifestyle choices.
Many of us are plagued with health conditions that we just can’t seem to alleviate. We may have a family history of breast cancer, diabetes, auto-immune conditions or cardiovascular disease. Do you want to find out if you have a predisposition to developing health conditions that have run in your family? Or would you just like to know why it is that you keep putting on weight, despite all the best intentions?
Nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics combines knowledge of your genetic profile. This knowledge enables me to provide a personalised treatment plan, incorporating the right nutrition, exercise and lifestyle for you. I make sure that how you live your life gives you the best, tailor made fit with your genes.
The Fitgenes Health and Wellbeing Genetic Profile report
Your Fitgenes Personal Health and Wellbeing Genetic Profile Report shows any variations you may have in your genes, which in turn, can influence your fitness, health and nutrition. As a Fitgenes Accredited Practitioner, Louella can use this information, combined with nutritional and lifestyle assessments, to design a personalised programme for you. This holistic programme is directed towards nutrition, exercise and lifestyle interventions. Your Personal Genetic Profile is an important piece in the puzzle, helping you maximise your potential for healthy living and healthy ageing. It really is the ‘icing on the cake’ for an individualised, holistic healthcare treatment plan.
Taking The Fitgenes DNA Sample
The Fitgenes DNA test is a non-invasive buccal (mouth) sample, which is analysed and returned as a report (genetic profile analysis) on which to base all personalised interventions. The genetic variants tested as part of your profile are grouped according to the primary physiological effect that they have on your body. Some of these groups include Fat Metabolism and Cholesterol Regulation, Cardiovascular Health, Vitamin D Receptors, Cell Defence and Inflammation. This focus is aligned with the belief that your overall health, wellbeing and performance are primarily determined by the health of your basic building blocks (your cells) and the messages emitted from genes within these cells (gene expression).
Other Benefits of Fitgenes Genetic Profile Analysis
- Fitgenes gives you and your practitioner a new understanding of your specific genetic needs. It provides the basis from which a personalised programme can be formulated that is simple to follow long-term.
- Fitgenes aims to help you to reach your health goals and to increase your health expectancy, maximising your potential for Healthy living and Healthy Ageing.
- The Fitgenes Genetic Profile Analysis need only be done once in your lifetime! However, each different life stage may bring with it different personal goals, such as stress reduction, weight loss or hormonal balancing. With knowledge of your specific genetic profile, we can target interventions specific to your life stage.
- Recent research indicates that there is an epigenetic advantage from altering gene expression, which can be carried through generations for those who have yet to have children.
This test uses a buccal swab that you take at home. The test process is clearly explained to you.
